This article will take you through some of the design sketches and reasoning that has gone into the final concept of the MagLev project. I make these available because I enjoy looking at other designers sketches and thought it only fair to share alike. The quality is not of the highest quality, being a project done on the side and drawn mostly on the sofa, but gives some kind of idea how I put together an idea for modeling.
I start by scribbling out some shapes that might inspire me and give me a springboard to come up with unconventional shapes. Here I have highlighted the scribble that I took as a starting point for my designs.
I then start trying to make these shapes work in three dimensions and styling the scribble into actual shapes and forms.
In these sketches I am playing with the proportions of the shapes to make sure I don't miss anything obvious and to keep exploring, looking for the best options.
These sketches show the birth of the 'Convoy mode' concept where multiple cars can be connected together and as a designer, obviously trying the make the shapes flow from one car to the next to further emphasize the idea of connectivity.
Here I have begun to home in on a shape for the car and am adjusting proportions at the front and rear to try and achieve a balance of form that is not too heavy in the wrong areas.
A brief look at textures, openings and rollerblade wheel options for the front of the vehicle.
The form is fairly well established and ready to move into the modeling stages with just some texturing and detail work to be decided.
Once the outside of the vehicle was designed, it was time to start designing the interior of the car and the features that would be present there.
